How much does roof painting cost in Christchurch?
It depends on the roof far more than on the house. The size and pitch, whether it is one storey or two, what it is made of, how much moss and rust there is, and how easy it is to get onto all move the price. A single storey long-run roof in good condition is at one end; a two storey concrete tile roof that has never been sealed is at the other. That is why we will not price a roof over the phone. Give us an address and Corey will come and look, and give you a real, written number.
How long does roof painting take?
Most roofs take two to four days including the wash, the treatment, the preparation and two coats, with drying time between them. Weather decides more than anything else - we do not spray onto a wet roof or ahead of rain, so a wet week can stretch a job. We tell you the start date before we begin and keep you posted if the forecast changes it.
Can you paint over rust?
Not straight over it, no - that is how a roof ends up peeling in a year. Surface rust is treated and primed with a rust-inhibiting primer before the top coats go on. A screw or nail head that has rusted through is replaced. If a sheet has genuinely rusted through, painting will not save it and we will tell you that, because a roofer needs to replace that sheet before we can do our part.
How often should a roof be repainted?
Every ten to fifteen years is the usual range, depending on the material, the coating that was used last time and how exposed the roof is. A north-facing Colorsteel roof in the nor'west sun fades faster than the south side of the same house, and anything near the coast at Sumner, New Brighton or Kaiapoi gets salt on top of the sun. The tell is chalking: run a hand over the roof and if it comes away powdery, the coating has stopped protecting the steel.
Does a painted roof stop leaks?
Painting is not a leak repair, and anyone who tells you a coating will fix a leaking roof is guessing. What it does do is seal the surface, the laps and the fixings against water getting in, which stops the small problems that turn into leaks. If we find something that is already leaking during the inspection we will point it out and tell you whether it is a painter's job or a roofer's.
